Tree felling in Westgate Wood

Visitors will have noticed that we have been clearing some of the ash in Westgate and next week WCG will start felling willow trees. Some of you may be surprised that last week we were calling for help to plant new trees and now we are felling larger ones but this is part of the essential maintenance of a sustainable woodland. Some ash are diseased and willow are not suited to our conditions so over the last few years we have planted 900 young oaks which, in the long term, will produce more successful trees than those which we are now removing. Their clearance will give the oaks space and light to grow.

Please do keep dogs under control to give Sally and her helpers space to work safely but sections of path may be closed for short periods.
